Bloukrans Bungee

Face Your Fear!

Five… four… three… Experience the extreme thrill of the highest commercial bungee jump bridge in the world.

The Bloukrans bridge is 216 m high, the jump is approximately 160 metres. You jump from the arch support of the bridge. A unique pendulum bungi system ensures the longest and smoothest ride in the world. Access to the jump point on the top of the arch is via a specially designed walkway underneath the road deck. The walkway is also 216 m long, offering breathtaking views and an inspiring experience in itself.

The Bloukrans Bridge is situated in the heart of the Garden Route, only 40 km from Plettenberg Bay in the  Tsitsikamma forest area.

Knysna Waterfront

The Knysna Waterfront

One of Knysna’s main tourism destinations, The Waterfront is a shopper’s, foodie’s, and boat-lover’s paradise.

The shops in the Waterfront sell clothing, books, gifts, curios, art, jewellery, and some interior décor materials (mostly ornaments, and soft furnishings).

Two aspects of the Waterfront are of particular interest: the draw-bridge across the canal that links the residential marina with the Knysna Lagoon (and, for pedestrians, the western portion of the shopping precinct with the eastern); and the life-size statue of Bondi  - Knysna’s most famous canine friend.

The counter-balanced, two-level, electrically-driven bridge is lifted whenever a sailing yacht or large motor vessel needs to pass through – and when it goes up, there’s no crossing to the other side for pedestrians (although it’s always a festive affair!)

The statue of Bondi commemorates an English Bulldog who visited Knysna on three different occasions aboard the HMS Verbena, a Royal Navy sloop that was stationed at Simonstown, near Cape Town, in the 1920s and ‘30s.

National Animal

The country’s national animal is the springbok, which also gives its name to the South African rugby team - fondly known as “the Boks”.

Coat of Arms of South Africa

South Africa’s coat of arms, or state emblem, is the highest visual symbol of the state. Its central image is a secretary bird with uplifted wings, a sun rising above it. Below the bird is the protea, an indigenous South African flower, representing the aesthetic harmony of all cultures and the country flowering as a nation.

The ears of wheat are emblems of the fertility of the land, while the tusks of the African elephant symbolise wisdom, steadfastness and strength.

At the centre stands a shield signifying the protection of South Africans, above which are a spear and knobkierie. These assert the defence of peace rather than a posture of war.

Within the shield are images of the Khoisan people, the first inhabitants of the land. The figures are derived from images on the Linton Stone, a world-famous example of South African rock art. The motto of the coat of arms -!ke e:/xarra//ke- is in the Khoisan language of the /Xam people, and means “diverse people unite”, or “people who are different joining together”.

Did you know?

Gold was discovered in Knysna in 1876. The Millwood mine is the first goldmine found in South Africa. The Millwood Mine Walk is one of the most beautiful in the Knysna Forest: wonderful landscapes in a place where a whole town mushroomed within weeks in the 19th century.

The Knysna Elephants are the last of the most Southern elephants on the African continent. Come and see them at the Knysna Elephant Park at only 15 minutes from Stannards Guest Lodge ****.

The Knysna Sea Horse (Hippocampus Capensis) is the most endangered sea horse species in the world. It is endemic to the region of Knysna. It is also the only fish where the male bears the offsprings.

And there are plenty of stories and activities to discover in the beautiful town ideally situated on the Gardenroute.
